Recently, the Information
& Broadcasting Ministry directed the Hindi television channel NDTV
India to be taken off air for 24 hours on November 9. However, the order was later
put on hold by the Ministry. The order has raised several issues related
to the freedom of media, viewers' right to see and read news and the government's
role to monitor the media.
It
is only Karnataka that would require an extension by 12 months. Although this too is inconvenient,
the benefits far
outweigh the costs.
